What is Endovenous Laser Treatment?
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure for the removal of varicose veins. Almost all patients with varicose veins are suitable candidates for EVLT, and it is covered by most insurance plans and Medicare.
What Can I Expect During Treatment?
A local anesthetic is used to numb the treatment area, and patients experience very little to no pain during the procedure. During treatment, an optical fiber is inserted into the varicose vein using ultrasound scanning. The laser is then activated, heating the vein and causing it to contract as the optical fiber is slowly withdrawn. Once the varicose vein closes, it is naturally absorbed by the body and any blood that was circulating through the vein is rerouted to healthy veins.
What is the Recovery Process Like?
Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after treatment and can return to normal activities the same day (avoiding high-impact activities for two weeks following treatment). Bruising and minor discomfort around the treated area may be experienced, but usually resolves quickly.
In the hands of a board-certified California Skin Institute physician, endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins offers less risk for complications than conventional surgery.
